On Thursday 29th March 2018, three girls from Riverview Junior School decided to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
The girls were very conscious that cancer affects probably every family within our school. It affects the young, the very young and the old; cancer stops at nobody.
There are many different types of cancer; bone cancer, leukaemia, colorectal cancer and prostate cancer. There are some great therapies out there but not all of them are successful and Cancer Research is one charity that continues to study and search for cures. Only, they rely heavily on donations to fund their research.
Cancer Research Fundraising
The girls had the idea when they were thinking of different ways to raise money for the charity. They had two main ideas which were either a cake sale or a sponsored run.
They went to the head teacher, Mr Kendall, and asked him which event he would prefer to raise money for? Mr Kendall decided that the cake sale would be most appropriate with an additional non-school uniform day (for a donation of £1) and an open classroom.
Mr Kendall suggested the team put together a PowerPoint and to present it in front of the whole school in assembly.
Christina says ‘Standing in front of the whole school was a very scary thing to do at first.’
When the day finally came, excitement was buzzing through the air. Letters had been sent home asking everyone to come into school dressed in pink or blue (or both) to represent the colours of Cancer Research. It was a really colourful day at school!
Students also brought in some delicious cakes, some homemade – thank you mums! and some shop bought but all equally scrumptious.
Lilly says ‘The parents were incredibly happy with the idea and loved being able to see the classrooms, enjoy some time with their children and speak to the staff.’
Parents rushed through the doors, cakes were sold like crazy and most importantly as a school, we managed to raise £1237.00 altogether for Cancer Research UK.
Blog Club is held on a Monday evening and is a group of about 20 pupils from Riverview Junior School who choose their own content and with the help of the teachers, create blog posts for you to read.
